On the evening of 28 December 2022, the monument to Catherine II and the four statues of her companions (Zubov, Potemkin, de Ries and de Volan) will be dismantled from the pedestal on the square where they have stood for 15 years, since 2007. This is the second time that this monument has been dismantled, the first time being in 1920, after 20 years on the same square since 1900.
The sculpture of Catherine and smaller figurines of her friends will be transported to the National Art Museum of Odessa, where they have always been on the museum's balance sheet, and stored in the courtyard. It is planned to transfer them to the future museum called "Park of the Imperial Past".
The same night, the monument to the Russian commander of Catherine's time - Alexander Suvorov, which stood on a pedestal at the entrance to one of Odessa's districts (the former village named Kotovsky, still called Poskot by Odessa residents), left its place. In the morning, in accordance with an established tradition, Russia shells Ukraine with cruise missiles.
The opinions of the people of Odessa on the demolition of the monument to Catherine are divided about 60/40, with the majority still believing that the monument should have been demolished. For those who cannot let go of the imperial past, this is a tragedy, but for those who understand how much grief and death Catherine brought to Ukrainians, it is a victory.
