Воздвигнуть памятник думали успеть к 100-летию Одессы, но долгострой - это наше все и в итоге открыли на восемь лет позже. В конкурсе победил проект архитектора Ю. М. Дмитренко с названием «Одесский порт». За проект он получил 2 тыс. рублей (неслабые деньги на то время) и еще 2,650 тыс. рублей за надзор. Скульптором стал профессор скульптуры, академик Императорской Академии художеств из Санкт-Петербурга, М. П. Попов (Ему отвалили 10 тыс. рублей.)), а фундамент и скульптуры фаворитов делал скульптор Б. В. Эдуардс (Ему и еще одному чуваку, владельцу магазина скульптурных изделий Леопольду Менционе, перепало 38 тыс. рублей.). more
